Overview

Steve Hodel is a retired LAPD homicide detective and New York Times bestselling author. After retiring, he spent decades investigating his father, Dr. George Hodel, whom he believes was behind the Black Dahlia murder. As Within, So Without follows that investigation into the surrealist art world his father moved in.

I designed and typeset the 212‑page book, placing more than 130 photographs, documents and artworks from a manuscript that kept changing throughout production.

Key impact

A 212‑page book, designed, typeset and prepared for print

The challenge

The manuscript brought together decades of records, letters, photographs and artworks. It had to read as a serious book rather than a case file, and each image needed to sit close to the passage that explained its significance.

Many of the source images were old scans of uneven quality. The book also had to meet Amazon’s print specifications for paperback and hardcover, while several rounds of text edits kept changing the layout.

Research and visual direction

I read the manuscript and Steve’s earlier books, then studied printed material from the art world of the 1930s and 1940s: catalogues, magazines, typefaces and the way pages were built around images.

I chose Adobe Caslon for its period character and its readability across a long book. It matched the editorial feel of the books and magazines that handled this work back then, and still felt modern next to the book’s layout. A consistent grid and generous margins gave the material room without making each page feel like a separate exhibit.

Images and production

The images were part of the evidence, not decoration. I placed each one alongside the passage it supported, with consistent framing and captions, so readers could follow the argument without searching through the book.

I coordinated the restoration of weaker scans and carried the layout through several rounds of structural edits. As the sole designer, I handled the typography, layout, image placement, captions and print-ready files, keeping Steve involved throughout and explaining decisions in terms of the reader’s experience.

Architecture exhibits: black-and-white photographs of the Hodel house and studio in Los Angeles, each with a figure number and caption
Full-colour spread: Fred Sexton’s 1955 painting Monalita beside the text that examines it
Appendix spread: Hodel family photographs from the 1940s arranged as numbered figures
Chapter Ten spread: Man Ray’s 1946 portrait of George Hodel on a black plate facing the chapter As Within So Without, set in Caslon

What changed

  • A 212‑page full-colour interior, typeset and prepared for print
  • More than 130 images placed and captioned in context
  • Restoration coordinated for lower-quality source images
  • A consistent layout system that absorbed structural edits
  • Print-ready files for paperback and hardcover, with the book on sale on Amazon

“Amr assisted me in a very challenging Art/Crime book project I authored. Very professional work and his continual ongoing communications and proferred insights were invaluable. I highly recommend him.”

Looking back

It’s one of the projects I’m proudest of. The material represented decades of investigation, and the design had to make that record easier to follow without pretending the evidence was simpler than it was. My job was to give the book a structure that respected the research and its historical context, while keeping the finished volume clear and readable.
